Holidays

Full-time employees receive their regular compensation for each of the following eleven (11) holidays:

New Year’s Day
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Third Monday in January
President’s Day – Third Monday in February
Memorial Day – Last Monday in May
Juneteenth
Independence Day
Labor Day – First Monday in September
Thanksgiving Day – Fourth Thursday in November
Day After Thanksgiving – Fourth Friday in November
Christmas Eve
Christmas Day

The City Manager is authorized to designate alternative days to observe those holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

Jury Duty

When an employee is called to serve as a juror in any court, the City Manager may authorize that the employee continue to receive his/her regular City pay during that period he/she serves as a juror.

Tuition Reimbursement

The City will pay 80% of the educational costs for courses, textbooks and fees related to an employee’s current position or her/his preparation for career advancement. The maximum reimbursement shall be $1,000 per calendar year; however, employees may request advances against a future calendar year’s Educational Assistance.

Pension Plan

The Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) covers eligible employees, except for Police Officers and Firefighters covered by the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund (OP&F). Employees may contribute additional towards retirement through voluntary deferred compensation programs.

Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)

Each member of OPERS currently pays 10.0% of his/her gross salary to the retirement system through payroll deduction, with the City paying 14.0%. Contributions to OPERS are in lieu of contributions typically paid into Social Security and are IRS qualified funds subject to applicable federal pension laws. Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund (OP&F)

A full-time Police Officer and full-time Firefighter covered by OP&F currently pay 12.25% of his/her gross salary to the retirement system through payroll deduction. The City’s contribution is 19.5% for a Police Officer and 24% for a Firefighter. Additional information about the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund may be found at www.op-f.org.

Deferred Compensation

Deferred compensation plans can provide you with a tax-sheltered, supplemental retirement plan, and flexible investment program. Contributions to these accounts are completely voluntary and there is no City match. The City has two programs through which employees may choose to set aside a portion of their income for retirement.

Employee Assistance Plan

Employees and their eligible family members have access to free, confidential, professional counseling services through the City’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The program offers assistance, counseling and/or referral for a variety of issues that affect employees and their family members.

Employee Council

The City of Kettering has an active Employee Council Committee which plans and organizes activities throughout the year such as the monthly employee recognition, Annual Kettering Employee Picnic, and other social events.  Employee Council also helps raise money through the humanitarian fund to assist fellow employees in times of need.

Pet Insurance

Pet insurance is available for purchase through MetLife at a discounted group rate. Employees can purchase pet insurance at any time. More information about MetLife Pet Insurance is available on The Barn (city employee intranet) or by request through the Human Resource Department.
