Swimming Pool Regulations:

Reference: City of Kettering Zoning Code and current adopted edition

  1. A zoning permit is needed for pools that are deeper than eighteen (18) inches or larger than sixty-five (65) square feet in area, or that measure more than nine (9) feet in an dimension. An electrical permit may be required for pools with pumps even if a zoning permit may not. Extension cords are not permitted for any pool equipment.
  2. Year round pools and pools larger than the requirements in #1 requires a permit.
  3. Pool must be located in rear yard.
  4. Pool must be enclosed with a six (6) foot high fence with locking gate, approved guards or pool safety cover. Fence structural supports and posts must be on interior side of fence. Non-support side of fence shall face toward a neighbors' property.
  5. Edge of pool water must be at a minimum of ten (10) feet or more from all property lines.
  6. Overhead poser lines less than ten (10) feet (horizontally) from edge of water must have the following minimum clearances:
    1. Twenty-two and half (22.5) feet from surface of water.
    2. Fourteen and half (14.5) feet from diving platform, tower or observation stand. Contact AES prior to installation for their requirements as they may be more restrictive.
  7. Overhead cable and phone lines less than ten (10) feet (horizontally) from edge of water must have the following minimum clearances.
    1. Ten (10) feet from surface of water.
    2. Ten (10) feet from diving platform, tower or observation stand.
    3. Contact utilities prior to installation.
  8. The pool shall not be located within five (5) feet of underground power lines not associated with the pool.
  9. Check for underground utilities prior to excavation. O.U.P.S. (Ohio Utility Protection Service) provides a convenient utility location service. Call them at 1-800-362-2764.
  10. Do not direct concentrated water onto neighboring properties.
  11. Control erosion and sedimentation during and after construction.
  12. Consult licensed electrical contractor for electrical and bonding requirements.

  • Zoning permit (Pool Company to obtain)

  • Electric company for wiring of pool (Electric Company to obtain)

Above Ground Pools - require 2 permits

  • Zoning permit (homeowner or pool company to obtain)
  • Electric permit for wiring & bonding (Homeowner or Electric Company to obtain)
