Leave Programs

Details on all Leave Policies may be found in the Personnel Ordinance and in the Administrative Policies and Procedures Manual.

Vacation Leave

All regular full-time employees are entitled to vacation leave at accrual rates in accordance with length of service criteria. Regular part-time employees accrue leave prorated on actual hours worked. Rates of vacation leave accrual for various employee groups are outlined in the Personnel Ordinance – Article III, Section 302.A; and in Administrative Policies and Procedures – Policy No. 302 – Vacation Leave.

Sick Leave

Full-time employees accrue sick leave at a rate of 15 days or 120 hours per year. The total amount of accrued sick leave may not exceed 260 days. Rates of vacation leave accrual for various employee groups are outlined in the Personnel Ordinance – Article III, Section 302.B; and in Administrative Policies and Procedures – Policy No. 301 – Sick Leave.

Personal Leave and Earned Days Off

In addition to Vacation Leave and ten (10) paid holidays, each regular full-time employee may be granted three days (24 hours) of paid Personal Leave annually. Regular full-time Public Safety Dispatchers and Police Department Uniformed Deputy Bailiffs and Jailers may be granted four days (32 hours) annually. Police Officers may be granted five days (40 hours) annually. A Firefighter, working a 40-hour per week schedule, may be granted forty hours annually. A Firefighter or Fire Captain assigned to a fifty-six (56) average hour workweek schedule shall not receive Personal Leave days but instead shall receive twelve (12) 24-hour EDOs annually.

Injury Leave

Injury leave with pay may be granted by the City Manager for service connected occupational illness or injury. Details are outlined in Personnel Ordinance – Article III, Section 302.C; and in Administrative Policies and Procedures – Policy No. 309 – Injury Leave.

Funeral Leave

The amount of funeral leave available for a death varies on the relationship to the employee. Details are outlined in Personnel Ordinance – Article III, Section 302.D; and in Administrative Policies and Procedures – Policy No. 307 – Funeral Leave.

Maternity, Paternity, Adoption and Foster Care Leave

Maternity Leave with full pay and benefits may be granted for that period of time a female employee is temporarily disabled due to her pregnancy. In certain circumstances, the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act may apply, and where applicable, certain similar benefits may apply to male employees or employees who have a child placed with them for adoption or foster care.
