The City of Kettering, Ohio is recruiting to fill the full-time position of Street Service I in its Public Service Department. Work is performed under moderate supervision as part of a crew or working individually. Performs general labor tasks in the maintenance of City streets and drainage systems, including: street patching and cleaning; spreading gravel, concrete and asphalt; leaf pick-up; storm sewer and channel cleaning; applying pavement markings; and the fabrication, installation and maintenance of traffic control and street signs. Snow removal and ice control during the winter season is a top priority. Utilizes various hand tools and equipment in accomplishing these tasks, including: shovels, rakes, brooms, tamps, rollers, jackhammers, chain saws, axes, etc. Drives dump trucks in order to haul materials to and from work sites; drives salt trucks with plows; operates other motorized equipment.
Ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment; must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License at the time of appointment, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a tank endorsement within 60 days after appointment. By law, employees required to have a Commercial Driver’s License must participate in an ongoing random drug and alcohol-testing program. The ideal applicant will have: a good driving record; a stable work record in a position that required the applicant to perform demanding labor outdoors; and the ability to work and communicate effectively with staff, co-workers and the general public. Related experience and having a current Commercial Driver’s License Class-A or Class-B, is a plus.
Must have the ability to grasp, lift and maneuver hand tools, power tools, equipment and materials, of various weights and sizes, in a manner which is safe and effective in the performance of work; must have the ability to physically endure vibration, jarring and bouncing when operating equipment over an extended period of time; ability to understand and follow written instructions, labels, and hazard notices; knowledge of basic math; ability to understand, follow, and communicate oral instructions; ability to exercise alertness and judgment to report possible hazards; and adequate physical condition to perform demanding labor outdoors, in all kinds of weather. Must be available and willing to work overtime, when requested.
The current entry rate for a Street Service I position ranges from $18.47/hr ($38,418/yr) up to $23.52/hr ($48,922/yr), with non-competitive promotional opportunities up to a Street Service III position with a current maximum pay rate of $31.14/hr ($64,771/yr). Excellent benefits.
