The City of Kettering is recruiting internally from among its current City of Kettering Regular Full-Time Street Service I – IV employees, who have successfully completed their 12-month probationary period, to fill a vacancy in the full-time position of Street Maintenance Supervisor.  This is a highly responsible salaried position in the City’s Street Division / Public Service Department, which periodically requires that work be performed before and after regular business hours.  The candidate hired for this position will work in conjunction with other Street Maintenance Supervisors and the Street Maintenance Manager, in the overall first-line supervision of approximately 35 full-time Street Service employees, in addition to the supervision of seasonal employees.  Street Maintenance Supervisors receive general direction from, and report to, the Street Maintenance Manager, and may receive occasional direction from the Public Service Director and Assistant Public Service Director.  Street Maintenance Supervisors are regularly required to exercise personal initiative and independent judgment in handling complex matters.  This position is in the Unclassified Civil Service of the City of Kettering.

Street Maintenance Supervisors function as key members of the Street Division’s management team by participating in and being responsible for the implementation of decisions pertaining to: work-flow and project planning; related communications; internal and external coordination with other departments, contractors and organizations; cost estimation and distribution of labor assignments, equipment and materials; activity reporting; safety; compliance with specifications and regulations; and prioritization.

General supervisory responsibilities may include: day-to-day and on-site supervision of the Division’s service employees; making presentations and leading or participating in group meetings involving work assignments, safety issues, training, policies, procedures and rules, and other general informational meetings; responding to citizen requests, inquiries and complaints pertaining to Street Division operations or services; assisting with the enforcement and compliance with City and Department/Division policies, rules, procedures and labor agreements, and applicable laws, ordinances and regulations.

General project assignments may include supervision of:  street, bridge and berm maintenance; street cleaning; snow and ice control; pavement markings and the fabrication, installation and maintenance of traffic control and street signs; leaf pickup program; drainage system cleaning and maintenance; recycling center operations; and other duties as assigned.


The candidate selected for this responsible Street Maintenance Supervisor position will have the ability to: demonstrate effective leadership and participative management skills; utilize progressive problem solving techniques; have good mechanical aptitude; present a positive representation of the City; have good customer service skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials, contractors and the general public; be knowledgeable in safe work standards and practices; have a good knowledge of construction techniques and equipment; exercise independent, sound judgment; interpret diagrams, prints and specifications; cost projects and prepare related activity reports; and use computers in the performance of duties.  Must have and maintain a valid Ohio Driver’s License and a Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with tanker endorsement.

Familiarity with street maintenance, construction and related equipment is important; however, emphasis will be placed on leadership, supervisory and management skills, and secondarily on specific technical knowledge of Street Division operations.


The maximum salary for the Street Maintenance Supervisor position is up to $93,912 per year; entry rate is dependent upon qualifications and experience.
