Secretary to the Chief of Police

(Regular Full-Time Position)

The City of Kettering, Ohio is seeking an individual with exceptional secretarial and office administration skills to include statistical analysis, and exceptional communication and writing skills to fill the Regular Full-Time position of Secretary to the Chief of Police. Work is performed with limited supervision and requires independent judgment. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to develop a thorough knowledge of the operations of the Police Department, as well as the overall City organization, and function well in a fast-paced “teamwork” environment. Must perform duties in a responsible manner and take initiative to perform tasks independently as needs arise.

Additional duties include: serving as office receptionist; greeting visitors and responding to telephone inquiries; monitoring and entering payroll; maintaining calendars and schedules; composing and typing correspondence; typing of text, forms, correspondence and reports from taped dictation and hard copy; special administrative projects; maintaining and purchasing office supplies; assisting with the Departmental budget; processing billings for consultants and vendors to the Department; preparing reports and survey data; developing Excel spreadsheets for cost comparisons and data management; creating PowerPoint presentations; managing the Department’s files in compliance with records retention schedules and other federal and state requirements; serving as liaison with other offices; and other duties and projects as assigned.


The ideal applicant must possess excellent administrative, writing, organizational, customer service and communication skills, a high level of proficiency in office computer applications, word processing, and data entry and analysis, database management, Lexis Nexis and crime mapping software, as well as demonstrated ability to work with all levels of staff and the general public. Preferred applicant will have experience as an executive secretary, supplemented by related college course work or training.


Pay range is $21.90/hr. ($45,552/yr.) to $31.05/hr. ($64,584/yr.); entry rate contingent upon the applicant’s skills, knowledge and abilities. Excellent benefits.
