POLICE CAPTAIN (Full-Time Position)

Only Current City of Kettering Lieutenants Eligible to Apply

GENERAL

The City of Kettering’s Police Department is recruiting internally from among current City of Kettering Full Time Lieutenants only to fill the Full-Time position of “Captain.” The Captain is a non-classified, full-time top-level management position, reporting directly to the Police Chief. The Captain position is a supervisory and administrative position. Receiving supervision and direction from the Chief of Police, this person is afforded considerable latitude in command judgment for the conduct of routine and non-routine phases of this position. Immediate supervision is given to subordinate supervisory officers. The Captain will develop recommendations for positive change in organizational procedures, policies, and departmental rules and regulations in addition to recommending disciplinary actions when necessary. This position will assume command of the Department in the absence of the Chief on a rotating basis with the other Captain; may assume command of the other division in the absence of that Captain; assist in the preparation of the annual budget; communicate and work with area police and law enforcement agencies; oversee the management of accreditation; make arrests; and perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should have comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and modern techniques in leadership, management and Police administration. Candidates should also have substantial working knowledge of Department goals and objectives, substantive and procedural laws, ordinances, policy and procedure relating to laws of arrest, search and seizure, interrogation, investigation and protection of constitutional rights of citizens. Additionally, the candidate should be knowledgeable of the principles and practices of union and employee relations, training and staff development and CALEA best practices and standards. The Captain candidate must have the ability to analyze complex Police issues, evaluate situations and make effective decisions under pressure, deal with the public effectively, courteously and fairly, communicate effectively orally and in writing and exercise integrity, personal initiative and independent professional judgement. A college education is strongly encouraged, supplemented by formal training in Police administration or any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities outlined above with extensive supervisory and management experience in Police work being essential.

COMPENSATION

The Captain position is an unclassified and exempt position with a current annual salary up to $122,554 ($58.92/hour) (Pay Grade 720) contingent upon the candidate’s related skills, knowledge, and abilities.
