The City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is recruiting to fill the Contractual position of Parks Inspector. The Parks Inspector is a professional and administrative position working under the general guidance of the Parks Superintendent. This position is responsible for planning and coordinating construction projects within municipal parks, playfields, median areas and other public grounds. Responsibilities involve project management relating to the physical properties of City parks, playgrounds, gardens, medians, tree lines, and all designated open spaces.
This position assists the Parks Superintendent with professional and administrative functions, including but not limited to divisional planning, training, management, budget and administrative procedure and process review. Responsibilities also include assisting the Parks Superintendent in data collection for review and verification and developing annual Capital Improvement Plan and associated projects. This position researches, and provides recommendations for park improvements; prepares specifications, reviews bids and manages capital improvement projects; meets with, coordinates and assists groups using park facilities relating to projects; assists in the design of parks and park features including master plans, play equipment, sports fields, trails, landscapes and corresponding cost estimates; identifies controlled inspections, special field coordination issues and performs other owner construction responsibilities. The Parks Inspector works closely with other City departments and divisions in carrying out overall objectives of the department and the City.
Candidates must have thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and practices used in park maintenance and management, and excellent knowledge of landscaping, construction, pond management, horticulture and general ground maintenance. Must have an understanding of various construction skills, including carpentry, concrete, fencing, steel fabrication, grading to direct construction, major and minor repair and correct safety hazards. Candidates must also possess working knowledge of all plant material, pest and disease control, herbicides and fertilization and have the ability to cooperate and work effectively with City officials, fellow employees and the public.
A four-year professional degree in a related field preferred, along with education and/or experience in park planning, design and construction or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Other desirable certifications include: Certified Playground Safety Inspector and Certified Parks and Recreation Professional. Proficiency in using Microsoft Word and/or Excel, Adobe, Auto CAD, GIS/CPS software and applications is desirable.
The hourly rate of pay for this position is up to $22.00/hour with a schedule of 24 hours per week for 50 weeks annually.
