The City of Kettering is recruiting to fill the position of Building Inspector. The position of Inspector performs a combination of field and office inspection work and enforces compliance with City ordinances and State codes in Electrical and Mechanical Code Enforcement. This position ensures compliance with City ordinances and State codes through field inspection and observation. Must be able to work effectively and cooperate with other staff members in a multi-discipline department that emphasizes teamwork. This position also does related work as required.
As a member of the Planning and Development Department team, the incumbent will be required to exhibit technical knowledge and judgment in electrical and mechanical code enforcement. Must exhibit an ability to remain knowledgeable of current codes and related laws and demonstrate considerable tact in gaining compliance. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Building Inspector with considerable technical independence according to the requirements of the applicable codes and ordinances.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The ability to acquire a thorough knowledge of City and State codes and related ordinances; the ability to understand and work from plans and specifications; thorough knowledge of the electrical and mechanical trade practices and working knowledge of a variety of building trade practices and materials including: electrical, heating, and/or construction; working knowledge of standard testing devices used in locating defects; successful completion of applicable state examinations and obtaining state certification; maintaining state certification through required training; the ability to devise corrective measures and estimate costs of repairing or altering defects; ability to use good judgment and make good decisions; ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in in writing; the ability to enforce code requirements with firmness and tact; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, contractors, and the general public. Must be in good physical condition, including the ability to bend, stoop, crawl and climb into, on and around construction sites.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Inspector with certification as an Electrical Safety Inspector (ESI) and either Mechanical (MI) or Fire Protection (FPI) is desired. The City will consider applicants who can obtain an interim certification at the time of hire. High school graduate or equivalent and a combination of experience and training in the field of code enforcement. Journeyman experience in a building trade including electrical, plumbing, construction and/or zoning is preferable; or any equivalent combination of experience, education and training, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to obtain require certifications. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio driver’s license and have a good driving record.
Pay range is $25.68 to $39.95 per hour. Entry rate is contingent on candidate’s related skills, knowledge and ability. Benefits include prorated medical and dental insurance, vacation leave, sick leave, holiday pay and other fringe benefits.
