Initiatives & Goals
KetterGreen
The Sustainability Office also oversees KetterGreen, which is a committee of city staff that helps promote and organize environmental events within the City facilities as well as the community. Events KetterGreen has hosted or organized over the last year are prescription drug drop offs to prevent these medications from going down our streams, hazardous household waste drop off, and document shredding. In addition to these events, KetterGreen has successfully implemented a better recycling program within city owned facilities and new recycling bins throughout our great parks.
Strategic Plan Goal 5: Sustainability
The City of Kettering’s 2024-2029 Strategic Plan has six goals, of which Goal 5 is Sustainability: a healthy, sustainable environment where decisions are made with an understanding of how they will affect the environment, people and communities today and in the future.
This goal within the Strategic Plan will help guide the Sustainability Office in the research, implementation, and engagement of sustainability projects and programs. Goal 5 is broken into four sub-goals under the categories of engage, support, and implement.
- Develop programs for all ages to further educate and share resources enhancing the city’s sustainability goals.
- Support programs and initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of homes and businesses within the city.
- Develop a sustainability plan for the city that determines baseline data and promotes annual review of progress and updated best practices for each department.
- Participate in local, regional, and statewide initiatives for sustainability.
Sustainability Annual Report 2024
The Sustainability Annual Report is a summary of the City of Kettering’s sustainability work and initiatives this past year, including an overview of the city's greenhouse gas inventory and shred day successes.
Initial Greenhouse Gas Inventory Completed
The City of Kettering worked with Power a Clean Future Ohio (PCFO) to complete an initial greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory of the community and governmental operations starting with calendar year 2023. A GHG inventory measures the amount of heat-trapping gases released by human activity within a defined area over the course of a year.
This GHG inventory provides baseline data to track increases and decreases in future emissions. Electricity is the largest contributor to emissions, with stationary fuels (gas/heating oil) being the next largest contributor. This information will facilitate the identification of reduction targets and effective strategies for reducing emissions as a long-term plan is developed, and can also be used to lower utility bills and save taxpayer money.
Shred Day Success
Kettering’s annual Shred Day event offered shredding, in addition to small electronics and Styrofoam recycling, keeping a total of 14.8 tons of material out of the landfill!
- Total Paper Shredded and Recycled: 24,560 lbs. (11.1 tons)
- Total Electronics Recycled: 4,950 lbs. (2.3 tons)
- Total Styrofoam Recycled: 3,046 lbs. (1.4 tons)
