Electricity Emissions

According to our 2023 Greenhouse Gas Inventory, over half of the City of Kettering’s emissions come from the residential sector. In the residential sector, electricity accounts for 46% of greenhouse gas emissions. A key way to reduce these emissions is by switching to renewable energy sources across all sectors, but especially residential.

Switch to Renewable Energy

Dynegy is the new electric aggregation provider for the City of Kettering, and they offer an opt-in renewable energy option for all residents. Their rate for traditional (fossil fuels) is 6.57 cents per kWh, which is the default option for all households. Their rate for 100% renewable energy is 6.97 cents per kWh, which must be requested.

Using average energy consumption rates, this small price difference would on average only cost households around $3.50 more per month. To opt-in for 100% renewable energy, please call Dynegy directly at 888-682-2170.

Reduce Energy, Reduce Costs

Nearly half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Try using a programmable or smart thermostat, or keep your thermostat set colder in the winter and warmer in the summer to reduce heating and cooling costs. Another tip that saves energy and money is switching to LED lighting because they use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. Washing your laundry on cold can also save a lot of energy as about 90% of the energy used by washing machines goes towards heating the water. Even washing your laundry on warm instead of hot can cut a load’s energy use in half.

Here are some additional actions you can take to reduce your costs and consumption:

  • Change air filters regularly.
  • Replace old heating and cooling equipment with energy-efficient equipment.
  • Seal your home’s envelope (such as windows and doors) by using caulk, weather stripping, and insulation.
  • Add more insulation to your attic.

Using water efficiently can also help reduce energy usage because water needs a lot of energy to be pumped, treated, and heated. Try taking shorter showers, not letting the water run while brushing teeth or shaving, turning off the sink while washing dishes, and replacing inefficient appliances. Small household leaks can add up to gallons of water lost every day, so make sure to fix household leaks as they occur.

Energy Efficiency at Home

In addition to reducing energy consumption, having energy-efficient appliances and systems can also reduce energy usage and costs. Prioritizing more sustainable heating and cooling systems improves efficiency, saves you money, and is better for the environment.
