Are there any age limits to attend?
The minimum age is 16.
Why do people attend the Fire Academy?
To learn more about the Citys firefighting operations, emergency medical services (EMS) and fire safety. Some have attended to learn more about a possible career path as a Kettering Volunteer Firefighter or as an administrative volunteer with the Fire Department.
What types of people have attended?
All types, including students, retirees, homemakers, as well as people who work in business, government, education and other professions. We have had five teenage graduates; one is now a volunteer firefighter.
Are there any tests?
No tests, just some fun and a great learning experience!
What if I cannot attend class on a certain evening?
Not a problem. Just attend as many as you can.
Will I be a firefighter when I graduate?
Becoming a firefighter takes additional training and certification. However, you will have taken a first step by attending the Fire Academy and becoming interested in firefighting and EMS.
Is it all classroom work?
Not at all. Only about 20 percent of the time is spent in the classroom. The rest of the time is spent observing operations or getting hands-on experience with the equipment.
Is there a charge? Do I need any equipment?
There is no charge for the classes. Well furnish all equipment needed.
Do I have to participate in all the activities?
No, only those activities with which you feel comfortable.
When is the Fire Academy held?
Each spring starting in April and each fall starting in September.
Is there any commitment after taking the class?
No, there is no commitment. We do encourage interested graduates to consider volunteering with the Fire Department in an administrative position (you wont have to fight fires!) or pursuing a volunteer or firefighter career with the Kettering Fire Department.
Where are classes held?
Classes are held at the Fire Department Headquarters Station 33, located at 2861 Bobbie Place. The class may sometimes meet at other Fire Department facilities.
How many academies have been conducted?
Six have been conducted since 2001. The Fire Academy was started 2001 by Kettering Fire Chief Robert Zickler to increase public awareness and to promote recruiting for the Department.
How many people have attended the Fire Academy?
More than 70 people have gone through it from the first class in 2001, through the last class of 2004.
Do I get a certificate when done?
Not only do you get a certificate upon completion, but also a graduation pizza party.

How much time does it take?
Classes are two hours long and are held one evening a week for seven weeks. The classes are taught by career and volunteer firefighters. The program includes an optional eighth week.
