Street Cleaning
The purpose of this program is to maintain a clean appearance
in Kettering, by keeping the right-of-ways free of illegal signs,
deceased animals and large debris. Thoroughfares are patrolled
frequently to maintain a clean appearance. The Street Department
also accepts requests by phone from citizens and other departments
within the City of Kettering.
If you are missing a pet and would like us to check our records,
please call our office at (937) 296-2472. When a deceased animal,
which is a pet, is retrieved; breed, color and location of pick up are recorded. This information is kept on file for approximately one month.
If a collar with identity tags is present, Animal Control is notified
at (937) 296-3266.
Private and/or commercial signs cannot be placed in the City
right-of-way (ROW). Generally speaking, the ROW is the area
of land between the road edge and the sidewalk. If there is no
sidewalk present, contact with the Engineering Department is recommended (937-296-2436) to determine ROW width.
Street Sweeping
Street sweeping is one of the most visible aspects of the Street
Division for the citizens and the traveling public. Clean streets
and gutters not only give the City an overall clean appearance
but aid in helping reduce traffic accidents and air pollution caused
by fine dust particles and debris on the roadway.
Keeping debris off the street and out of the gutters prevents
debris from entering and clogging the storm drainage system,
which can add to the cost the City faces for cleaning the
drainage system.
The Street Department is responsible for the daily maintenance,
equipment service, and sweeping of over 242 miles of streets.
Thoroughfares and districts are checked often, and this determines
which areas will be swept and the number of cleaning cycles needed.
This operation includes hand sweeping of identified concrete islands
and medians throughout the City.
Sweeping requests are also generated by phone calls from citizens. Excessive rain and temperatures below 36 degrees restrict street
sweeping operations at times.
