When people think of recreation in Kettering, they think first of the Kettering Recreation Complex, located at 2900 Glengarry Dr. In 1988, Kettering citizens approved a $10.7 million bond issue, giving the green light for major additions and renovations to the city's recreation center.
The result is the Kettering Recreation Complex, a spectacular 145,000-square-foot facility that brings under one roof the Charles I. Lathrem Senior Center, the Kettering Ice Arena, a lap pool and spa, a multipurpose gymnasium, a walk/run track, a nursery, aerobics and fitness rooms, meeting rooms and more. On the south side of the facility is Adventure Reef Water Park, a three-acre facility that's unequaled among municipalities in Ohio, as well as shuffleboard courts and horseshoe pits. In 1994, a bigger and more efficient refrigeration system was installed at the Kettering Ice Arena to replace a tired 23-year-old system, allowing the facility to expand its ice season from 6 months to 10 months (August-May).
Completed in 1990, the Kettering Recreation Complex is located in Indian Riffle Park, a beautiful 95.2-acre park that features a one-mile fitness trail, a sledding hill, a two-acre stocked pond, the accessible Playground for All, a disc golf course, ball fields and more.
The Kettering Recreation Complex offers more than a thousand programs each year for everyone from infants through senior adults regardless of race, color, sex, national origin or disability. The KRC offers all of the classes you'd expect such as swimming, ice skating, fitness and gardening and many that might surprise you, such as self-defense, scuba diving and etiquette. And hardly a week goes by without some sort of special event at the Kettering Recreation Complex, such as a penny carnival or a theme party.
Many private groups rent the Main Pool, Water Park, Ice Arena or meeting rooms for social or business occasions. Groups or families in search of facilities for dinners or receptions often turn to the Charles I. Lathrem Senior Center for its well-equipped kitchen and large program center. In addition, the KRC organizes birthday parties for groups of children and even offers "group lock-ins," in which rental groups have access to most of the facility from 10 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday.
The Kettering Recreation Complex is truly the "Center for It All." Attendance has risen steadily since it was completed in 1990.
