Accident Investigation Technicians
The Kettering Police Department has a team of four, specially-trained Accident Investigation Technicians. These technicians investigate all fatal, serious injury and high City liability crashes. Technicians are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their training includes over 120 hours of specialized training with annual refresher training. All of our technicians have some sort of advanced training in specialized areas such as motorcycles, pedestrian or commercial vehicles.
The team uses state-of-the-art laser range and measuring devices to accurately create scale drawings of all crash scenes. After laser measurements are taken, the unit uses computer-aided auto sketching programs to complete multi-layered diagrams of the crash scenes. These diagrams, in conjunction with 35mm and digital photographs and video, create a real-life portrayal of the crash for prosecutors and courts.
The team handles between 10-15 crashes a year with the majority during the summer months. These investigations encompass all aspects of the crash and interface with traffic engineers, insurance companies and auto manufacturers.
