School Resource Officers
The school environment is a microcosm of the community. The mission of the School Resource Officer is to be a linchpin connecting justice needs with education needs as they pertain to the schools in Kettering.
The School Resource Officer has four primary roles in the schools:
Problem solver and liaison to community resources
Educator
Safety expert and law enforcement officer
Mentor

Ptl. Wayne Villelli
Ptl. Villelli was appointed SRO in January of 2007.  He is responsible for maintaining constant relationships and interaction with the Kettering elementary and middle schools. His school visitations will deal with such topics as peer pressure, dealing with strangers, and saying "no" to the use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs.  Officer Villelli has been with the Kettering Police Department since September of 1995.  He comes to the Community Relations Section from Patrol where he also worked as an Evidence Technician.  Prior to his tenure with Kettering, he was an officer with the Englewood (OH) Police Department and the Metro Dade (FL) Police Department. 

 
 

Ptl. Jennifer Smithhart
Ptl. Smithhart works full time at Kettering Fairmont High School and Kettering Middle School as a School Resource Officer. She teaches programs to students in the classroom such as OVI Prevention and Choices and Consequences. She performs police duties on school properties to provide a safe environment for the students and staff. Ptl. Smithhart has been with Kettering Police Department since October, 2000. She is a Field Training Officer, an Evidence Crew, a Crime Scene Videographer, a SAFE Instructor, and a RAD Instructor. Ptl. Smithhart acts as the Alarm Administrator in charge of tracking and sending out assessments to residents and businesses that violate the City Ordinance regarding false alarms.
 
 

Ptl. Joe Ferrell
Ptl. Ferrell is one of the School Resource Officers at Kettering Fairmont High School and Van Buren Junior High School. Duties at Fairmont and Van Buren include teaching programs to students in the classroom such as OVI (DUI) prevention and helping to teach Choice and Consequences class.  The police involvement in the schools also includes law enforcement based upon requests from the school principals. The officers and the school faculty work together to provide a safe environment for all students.

Ptl. Ferrell has been with the Kettering Police Department since 1999.  He is a member of the Special Response Team and is actively involved in the RAD Program.
