Police Officer Recruitment Information

The Position
Duties and work requirements of police officers consist of preventive patrol, preliminary investigations and traffic control in designated areas. It may also include a variety of staff assignments, such as criminal investigations, research and development, and community relations.

Duties may involve an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without immediate and direct supervision, and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. The nature of the work requires irregular schedules, covering all hours of the day, 365 days a year.

Patrol officers who meet specified service and skill requirements are eligible to compete for promotion to a supervisory position.

Applicants should be of exemplary character and be able to demonstrate traits that are consistent with the mission and values of the Kettering Police Department.

The City of Kettering conducts recruitments for entry-level and lateral entry patrol officers. Prior to conducting a recruitment, the decision is made as to whether the recruitment will be for entry-level or lateral entry patrol officers. The qualifications which must be met and the selection processes for each are outlined below.


ENTRY-LEVEL PATROL OFFICER RECRUITMENT

Qualifications:
Age – Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

Physical Condition – Must be physically capable of performing essential police duties and pass a thorough medical examination, which includes a drug screening.

Ohio Operator’s License – Appointee must possess or obtain a valid State of Ohio Operator’s License.

U.S. Citizen – Must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment.

Education Requirements At the time of appointment, candidates must have an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university OR the equivalent college credits and be actively enrolled in a Baccalaureate Degree Program.

Selection Process:
The Civil Service examination process will consist of a written examination. Applicants receiving a passing score on this exam will be notified regarding subsequent phases of processing, which will include:

Background check (credit, police record, work and personal references, etc.)
Personal interview
Polygraph
Psychological assessment
Thorough medical examination and assessment of physical capabilities
Successful completion of a one-year probationary period
Inability to satisfactorily complete any phase of this process or failure to appear for any phase may be cause for elimination from consideration.

LATERAL ENTRY PATROL OFFICER RECRUITMENT

Qualifications:
Physical Condition – Must be physically capable of performing essential police duties and pass a thorough medical examination, which includes a drug screening.

Ohio Operator’s License – Appointee must possess or obtain a valid State of Ohio Operator’s License.

U.S. Citizen – Must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment.

State Certification – Certification as a peace officer from the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council (O.P.O.T.C.) is desirable.

Ohio Candidates: Must possess an O.P.O.T.C. Basic Police Certificate. Any training requirements, as determined by O.P.O.T.C., must be completed within one year after date of appointment.
Out-of-State Candidates: Candidates must request an evaluation of their training status from the O.P.O.T.C. They will be given an Ohio/Update Certification information form which will be mailed to the O.O.O.T.C. Any supplementary training must be completed at a state-approved and certified training academy before assignment to an FTO program.

Law Enforcement Background – At the time of appointment, candidates must have successfully completed at least one year of service as a full-time police officer with a city, county, state or municipal police agency and must not have been out of active law enforcement status for more than one year.

Education Requirements – At the time of appointment, candidates must have an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university OR the equivalent college credits and be actively enrolled in a Baccalaureate Degree Program.

Selection Process:
The Civil Service Selection Process requires completion of a comprehensive questionnaire and an application. (Resumes are desirable, but not required.)

Top candidates will be asked to participate in subsequent phases, which include an extensive background check, polygraph, psychological assessment, thorough medical exam, oral board and final interviews.

Inability to satisfactorily complete any phase of this process or failure to appear for any phase may be cause for elimination from consideration.
