With this HDHP arrangement, the employee is responsible for opening a tax-sheltered account (Health Savings Account, or HSA). Exisiting HSA accounts used in 2011 may be used and do not need to be changed.
The City of Kettering currently (2011) funds 100% of the HSA contributions to cover the annual deductible. However, in 2012, the city will fund 75% of the HSA contribution. The remaining 25% will be funded by the employee. This portion of the HSA fund can be paid by lump sum deposit, pay roll deduction or direct payment of medical expenses.
The employee can make additional contributions, however, total contributions are limited annually per the IRS. Money put into this account can be used for future medical expenses and any unused money can be carried forward to the next year. |
