Welcome to the Safety Section

The Kettering Safety Section coordinates and provides educational transportation safety projects and manages the Safe Routes to School project (SR2S).

Safety Supervisors provide school safety patrol training to over 400 students annually that serves all public and private schools in Kettering. The Safety supervisors also work at critical school crossings and major traffic intersection located by the elementary schools.

The Safety Section manages grant supported injury prevention projects to protect our citizens, pre-school through adults. Some of the grant-supported programs include the All Wheeled Activity Safety Education project and bicycle helmet distribution, the Older Driver project and Older Adult Fall Prevention project.

The section works in collaboration the Kettering Fire Department, Kettering Police Department and with the Kettering City Schools to provide a citywide injury prevention and safety education program. The Safety Section works with local civic groups, hospitals, safety based organizations and neighboring city law enforcement and fire departments to provide multiple injury prevention and safety education projects to all residents.

The Kettering Safety Section is the recipient of multiple national, state and regional awards and recognition for various traffic safety and injury prevention outreach accomplishments. One of the most noteworthy award winning programs is the Kettering Safety Village founded by the Dor-Wood Optimist and continues to be supported by their members. The Safety Section has existed for over 35 years and is one of the longest operated and unique public safety programs in the State of Ohio.

The section is comprised of 9 part-time Safety Supervisors and 1 fulltime Senior Safety Supervisor. The majority of staff has completed Safe Kids Worldwide training and certification as Child Passenger Safety Technicians and provides support to area Child Passenger Safety events. Many of the staff are former educators and have had advanced injury prevention training or hold national certification in the health and safety field.
