Stone Symposium
Kettering Rocks! International Stone Sculpting Exposition
From September 9 through 29, 2002, the City of Kettering's Public Art Program, CitySites, hosted eight international artists to sculpt stone in Delco Park and allowed the community to interact with the project. As we watched the progress of the stone formations over the 20-day event, we were drawn into the energy of the event by witness of the creative minds and the sheer strength and endurance it takes to master the large limestone blocks.

The City of Kettering's Art in Public Places Committee selected the placement of four of the works created during Kettering Rocks! International Stone Sculpting Exposition throughout Kettering. The sites selected for the stones were determined through the appropriate use of space with the sculpture, security of the sculpture in the location, diversity of the selected locations and the vision expressed by the artist producing the stone work.

Cultural Arts Superintendent Connie Campbell observed during this location selection process that it is much easier to produce a sculpture for a specific location than to produce a location for a specific sculpture. The City of Kettering is fortunate to have many large and expansive green spaces and paved urban parks for the public to enjoy, yet each stone sculpture presents a particular challenge in selecting the right public space and exact placement for its greatest advantage.
