Glass Public Art Project

In 2009 a call for artist was made to select a glass artist to design and install a 700 square foot window or hanging glass design in the newly renovated Kettering Government Center. In 2010, after reviewing and interviewing artist from a three state area, the Art in Public Places Committee selected, LaGrange, Kentucky stained glass artist, Erin McIntyre. Erin McIntyre designed a beautiful window to fit within the council chambers window that will become a vocal point for the Kettering Government Center. In December of 2010, the installation of the window was complete. A dedication for the new Government Center and the window is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25 at 6:00 p.m. located at 3600 Shroyer Road, Kettering 45429.

Kettering Parks/Create Community

Two hands on projects were selected by the Art in Public Places Committee to produce with the community. The newly renovated Wenzler Park on Lincoln Park Boulevard and Kennedy Park on Bigger in Kettering were selected as the park sites.

EGG

From a call for artist in producing a project that would engage the community in designing, planning and construction two public art works, Yellow Springs artists, Beth Holyoke and Kaethi Seidl, worked with the community surrounding Kennedy Park in Kettering to design an EGG covered in made mosaic tiles. The community was asked what the park meant to them and what type of images would they like to see on the form. Many images mentioned represented Polen Farm and the animals living on the farm and in the pastures. The project involved over 450 individuals creating tiles for the public art work.

The Friendship Arch

Fairborn artist, Tess Little, worked with the Community in planning the art work for Wenzler Park with a 12 foot tall stainless steel arch and benches titled The Friendship Arch. The arch was constructed from 250 individual hands traced by the participants with individualized symbols selected by the participant. The adult participants are shown on the arch while the youth participants’ hands are represented on the two stainless steel benches. The arch creates a place for play and rest for the community to enjoy. Each individual contributing to the arch is noted on the bronze plaque next to the work of art.

The first commissioned public sculpture was installed in the Lincoln Park Civic Commons area June 2001. The aluminum structure, depicting four stylized figures reaching skyward, was designed and fabricated by Gambier, Ohio, artist Barry Gunderson.
