Every citizen has the responsibility to register to vote and to express an opinion at the polls. Citizen participation in government is essential for a strong democratic system.
In order to vote, a person must be:
A United States citizen
At least 18 years old on the day of election
A resident of the state at least 30 days before election
A registered voter at least 30 days before election
A person may register to vote or report a change in name and or address at the following locations:
Board of Elections, 14 W. Fourth Street, Dayton, Ohio
Any public library in the county, except Germantown
All municipal offices in Montgomery County
The township offices of Harrison, Madison, Miami and Washington
Bureau of Motor Vehicles
Registration forms may be requested by mail or telephone from the Board of Elections at 225-5656.
A citizen can vote absentee for any of the following reasons:
You will be absent from the county on election day
You are 62 years of age or older
You are a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and are serving outside the state in which you are registered to vote. Spouses and/or dependents also may qualify for an armed services absentee ballot.
You will be hospitalized on election day
You have had an accident or unforeseeable medical emergency
You have a personal illness or physical disability
You are an election official
You cannot vote on election day due to religious observances
You will be in jail for a misdemeanor or awaiting a felony trial.
